The Weekly Sip shares poetry tied to a dubious little dive bar in the midwest known as The Oasis. Enjoy weekly song recommendations, drink recipes, and poems - all pairing together less like a fine wine with Brie and more like a cheap shot of bourbon with stale peanuts. Cheers!
Song recommendation: “(You’re The) Devil In Disguise” - Larkin Poe
For many, love is two sides of the same coin; it’s the symbiotic relationship between push and pull, give and take, euphoria and heartache.
The longer I serve Weekly Sips and spend time in Substack, the more I’m inspired to write new poetry (most of my collection was written years ago as a precursor to a book). I recently came across another poet on Substack, Nelly Bryce, who prompted a pantoum style poem. After perusing her article, I started listening to playlists about the turmoil of romance and let my muse lead me to “Toast for an Angel.” While it’s not a formal pantoum, it pulls from the same line repetition which is arguably the perfect pattern for feeling lovesick and a fitting toast for The Oasis.
Drink pairing: Angels Envy Highball
Angels Envy is delicious neat, but if you’re looking for something lighter with the smooth qualities of the namesake spirit try it in a classic Highball cocktail.
Angels Envy Highball:
2 oz. Angels Envy Kentucky Bourbon
4 oz. soda water or ginger ale
2 lemon peels + slice
Fill highball glass with ice, add lemon peels, pour bourbon, fill with soda water or ginger ale and stir
Garnish with lemon slice
Toast for an Angel
For you, my love
I’ll always raise a glass
A toast to an angel (or demon)
Unsure which of the two best suits you
I’ll always raise a glass (to my lips)
When discerning if we’re lovers or friends
Unsure which of the two best suits you
Who’s the cat? Who’s the mouse?
When discerning if we’re lovers or friends
The circle spins into oblivion
(I ask again) Who’s the cat? Who’s the mouse?
Contemplation overwrought
The circle spins into oblivion
For you, my love (my curse)
Contemplation overthought
A toast to a demon
Ooh gorgeous. And thank you for the mention.
Love this! Might have to pour myself an Angels Envy tonight in fact.
