Welcome to The Oasis, a collection of poetry tied to a dubious little dive bar in the midwest. Enjoy song recommendations, drink recipes, and poems - all pairing together less like a fine wine with Brie and more like a cheap shot of bourbon with stale peanuts. Cheers!
Song recommendation: “Girl From the North Country” - Boby Dylan & Johnny Cash
Last week we met a Beauty Queen and Elisabeth Mae. If you missed the post I recommend revisiting the poems to help with continuity, as this week’s sip is based on the same characters.
More on continuity, and a bit of background for new readers, all of my poems are based on characters or themes from a novel I’m working on that shares the same title as the poetry collection, Welcome to The Oasis. The project started with twenty-ish poems and the intention of writing a poetry book. Over time, I started realizing there was a storyline emerging and that the characters needed space to breathe (and more pages to tell their stories). Twelve poetry posts published on Substack and nearly five chapters into the book, I’m incredibly grateful for those of you who hop in the passenger seat with me each week to visit The Oasis via The Weekly Sip. Thank you for helping keep my cup full and my dreams flowing, it means the world to me.
Drink recommendation: Old Fashioned
An Old Fashioned is a seemingly timeless cocktail, with as many variations on the recipe as there are spirits to include. Some consider bourbon the best option, others rye whiskey. For this particular recipe, I looked to Cocktails with Suderman, whose authority on all things cocktail related is unmatched. For the in-depth details on this week’s drink recommendation visit his One Dollar Old Fashioned recipe, my slightly altered version is below:
2 ounces bourbon
2 dashes of Angostura bitters
1/4 ounce simple syrup
1 orange twist, for garnish

Beauty Queen 1:47 a.m.
She walks back into the bar
Hair strewn, lips pursed
She pulls lightly
At her creeping skirt
She mellows herself
Orders her gin
She politely asks him
To hold the tonic this time
She crumbles just in time
To find the barstool
And quickly wipes away
Dry tears from her eyes
The men they all stand up
Announce they can get up
"This lovely Miss Lady,
has surely lost her way"
But she knows immediately
Where she can feel safe now
She knows where she'll always
Be loved and adored
She takes down her hair now
No mistake can she make
For she now, allows herself
To fully come out
To fulfill all their doubt
And become his devout
In the back seat
