Welcome to The Oasis, a collection of poetry tied to a dubious little dive bar in the midwest. Pull up a barstool and share a drink (poem) with me every Friday, and get to know the patrons via this newsletter, The Weekly Sip. You’ll find song recommendations, drink recipes, and poems - all pairing together less like a fine wine with Brie and more like a cheap shot of bourbon with stale peanuts. Cheers!
Song recommendation: “Cheap Sunglasses” - ZZ Top
During my misspent youth I’d often hide behind a pair of cheap sunglasses, shielding me from sunshine, unnecessary questions, and hyper coworkers. I’d like to think Alana, (who we’ve met before), can also appreciate a pair of cheap sunglasses.
Drink pairing: Dirty martini on the rocks
This week’s sip takes shape in a concrete poem, where a form emerges that’s tied to the work itself; a loose definition fit for a loose concrete poem. In honor of the poem’s namesake, we’ll share a classic drink that’s salty, undeniably strong, and a tad chilly. Dirty martini on the rocks:
1 dash dry vermouth (swirl in tumbler glass and toss excess)
Fill with ice
6 oz. vodka
1 oz. olive juice
Stir
Add 3 olives (stuffed is best, try garlic or jalapeño)
I just re-read the poem and realized that it's in the shape of a bottle....very clever! The poem itself is great! Keep it going Heidi....your talent keeps on going strong!
